At a temporary manufacturing facility inside ProvPort in Providence, R.I., Deepwater Wind and GE – along with Gov. Gina Raimondo, D-R.I., and several members of Rhode Island’s political and labor leaders – updated attendees on the progress of the Block Island Wind Farm, slated to be the first offshore wind farm in the U.S
“From Providence and Quonset Point to the waters off of Block Island, the Ocean State is leading the growth of a new American Industry,” explained Jeffrey Grybowski, Deepwater’s CEO, at Friday’s event. “This work at ProvPort brings one of the world’s most innovative companies to the City of Providence. And, just as important, we’re putting more Rhode Islanders to work and giving them the experience they need to help grow this industry.”
GE – which completed its acquisition of Alstom’s offshore wind unit last year – is supplying five Haliade 150-6 MW wind turbines for the Block Island Wind Farm. Last November, the first five of 15 total tower sections arrived by ship at ProvPort. The 95-foot-tall sections were offloaded at a new temporary manufacturing facility built by GE at the port.

Acciona SA is seeking to use wind farms to balance the Spanish national grid in times of peak demand, a job that’s typically done by fossil-fuel or hydropower plants.
The Alcobendas, Spain-based company is in a trial phase to be accredited by the Spanish grid operator to act as a backup power supplier, able to deliver extra capacity of 1 gigawatt, it said in an e-mailed statement. The renewable energy developer has about 5 gigawatts of wind power installed in the country.
“Getting wind to provide upwards regulation is an important step to integrating renewables,” said Monne Depraetere, analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. “The issue is that is requires curtailing wind farms so they can increase output at any given time, meaning other plants such as gas or coal plants need to run instead of wind, which is generally more costly.”

Toyota Motor Corp. is responding to the main criticism of fuel cell cars, that making the hydrogen for the fuel is not clean, with plans to help make the hydrogen using wind power.
Fuel cells are zero-emission, running on the power created when hydrogen combines with oxygen in the air to make water. But to have a totally clean supply chain, the hydrogen must also be cleanly made. Right now, most hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels.
In a project announced Monday, hydrogen from the wind-power plant Hama Wing in Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo, will be compressed and transported by truck to power fuel-cell forklifts at four sites in the area — a factory, a vegetable-and-fruit market and two warehouses.

Detroit Zoo has kicked the New Year off with a clean start, and has shifted to exclusively using renewable energy for all its operations. It is the first zoo in the US to earn verification by Green-e Marketplace, which certifies organizations that are reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. This means that the zoo now uses 100% Green-e certified wind energy sourced from US wind farms, reducing its environmental impact significantly.
The zoo, with 125 acres of naturalistic habitat in Royal Oak, Detroit, purchased enough megawatt-hours (Mwh) of renewable energy certificates (RECs) to offset the current electricity use at the zoo, and if its energy needs increase or decrease, the amount of Mwh can be adjusted accordingly.
